“Gold”, “Silver” & “Bronze” Industries

The most promising sectors

Carpe Diem

It is no secret that current Russian laws don’t seriously embrace the interests of a genuine free market economy nor are they of much help in the development of domestic businesses. Nonetheless, Russian companies have drawn some legal protection from foreign competitors. In the near future when Russia joins the WTO, these companies will find themselves without their former state protection. A good number of current limitations on foreign businesses and investors will likely disappear. Realistically speaking, many Russian companies will certainly be unable to compete with foreign competitors and will die if they don’t find ways to attain equality with global industry standards. Right now, they can’t achieve that level with their own resources. Even if they do have access to major financial capital, these companies know that they seriously need foreign technology and know-how. Today’s Russian companies actively seek partnerships with foreign companies (which wasn’t the case before).

The diagram is based on official Russian statistical ranking of the nation’s industries reflecting the following criteria:
-output profitability
-productivity
-share of profitable enterprises

- growth dynamics of profit margins
- growth dynamics of industrial output

Investors will soon be able to enjoy choice opportunities when Russia joins the WTO.
But our forecast for the upcoming years regarding the business situation in Russia will be that opportunities for foreign investment will grow scarcer.

Our advice?
Carpe Diem!
Seize the moment!

“Gold” Industries

“Gold” Industries - key drivers for the economy and a main focus for investors. Few business sectors have truly survived at the heart of the Russian economy and been able to acquire enough international competitiveness to boost their exports. These “Gold” ranked sectors are rapidly expanding into the global economy. They make a huge contribution to the development of other sectors of the Russian Economy. Their vital economic role naturally makes them the focus of interest to domestic and foreign investors.

“Silver” Industries

“Silver” Industries – strategic sectors directly supporting the key economic drivers and are highly dependable options for investors. Though foreign investors can no longer benefit from the lucrative opportunities in Russia’s richest “bread and butter sectors, ” they still have very good opportunities for investing in Russian companies that helped build the large NFRASTRUCTURE of Russia’s immensely profitable energy and mining industries. Many Russian manufacturers historically part of this exclusive infrastructure provided key support services to lucrative oil, gas, mining and other related industries. And yet they operate at low technical and technological capacity. Today, Russia’s major energy industries prefer using foreign machinery and equipment since the quality of domestic manufacture and production are still sub-standard. The importation of Western machinery, however, are so costly that even large companies would rather avoid this route. In response, the government, naturally interested in developing the country’s profitable mining sectors, encourages the development of competitive infrastructures for its industries using foreign partnerships and investment.

“Bronze” Industries

“Bronze” Industries—other strong sectors that shouldn’t be overlooked Russia enjoys other valuable economic sectors. The domestic Russian market hungers for foreign apparel, beverages, foods, and other international consumer products. Both Russian producers and manufacturers realize that they have to improve their technical and technological standards. This realization has been forced upon Russian companies due to the huge impact on the future of their companies when Russia will shortly join the WTO.
